Leap

I feel like I'm packing up for college all over again. Most of my belongings will stay behind, while I pick through everything and take only what is absolutely necessary. We've been spoiled with our home here in Austin, and we'll be downsizing to a place the size of our current bedroom. Good thing I don't suffer from serious claustrophobia!

We've been praying about this decision to move to NYC for months now, and I felt like our prayers had been falling on deaf ears. My faith is so often shortsighted. Like Mom says, "God doesn't bring it until you need it." So true! Now that we're at a little over a month left on our lease in Austin, we're finally seeing some visible evidence of God's ever-present hand in our lives. Which makes me feel so dumb for ever doubting that He was listening. We've let work know that we're moving up there, and the responses have been so supportive and encouraging. Right now, we have a few decisions to make regarding when to move and what to do about jobs, but we'll let you know what happens over the next couple of months.

I'll start school in December, right before Christmas. Which means...just the two of us this year for the holidays. I've never been without family on Christmas, and it makes me a bit sad, but I'm also thrilled about being able to spend a snowy (hopefully!) Christmas with my hubby, where we can have a quiet couple of days together before we're tossed into busy schedules again. It will be such a sweet time for us.

God's provision has been incredible during this time, and I feel like He has blessed this decision to pursue my passion and strengthen my gifts at this time in my life. It is a huge leap of faith to move up there, not knowing at this point what our finances will look like while I'm in school. But - the Lord has always provided exactly what we need, and I am confident that He will continue to do so.

We ask for your continued prayer as we prepare for our move up there, particularly regarding jobs, financial support for school, housing (affordable and in a safe area!!), and how long we should stay up there post-graduation.

Road Trip to New York City

Luke and I have been seriously considering moving to NYC for culinary school. He'll hopefully find a job up there, and I will start the pastry program at the French Culinary Institute. We wanted to check out the school in person, so we decided to drive up there with our moms, having a mini road trip/vacation.

It took us 2.5 days to get up there, since we decided to take our time, and I wanted to see Amanda in Delaware. We didn't do a whole lot of sightseeing on the way up there or on the way back, but it was nice to spend some quality time with the moms, and I think they had a great time getting to know each other better. Took Amanda out to lunch on Monday - so good to see her! I'm still not great at documenting my life with the camera, so no pics until we got into NYC.

Major hassle trying to get into Lincoln Tunnel, as you can see below. About 5 lanes of traffic trying to merge into 2 lanes. Luke was a master driver though and pushed his way in like the best of them.

Here is just the girls' luggage - we were quite embarrassed taking this up to our room. We are NOT light packers.

We decided not to do the tourist thing this trip, in hopes of seeing the New York that the locals know. I've become quite the master of hailing a cab, and I think I'll master the subway in no time. Dinner the first night was kind of a flop, but we were exhausted and stopped at the first decent looking restaurant we could find. Dinner the second night was incredible. Pizza at Lombardi's - best pizza I've ever had. Huge yummy salads. Great atmosphere. Kirsten Dunst sitting just a couple tables away. No joke.

We had tickets to go inside the studio of Good Morning America, which we did the morning after we got there. We were up at around 4:30 that morning and trekked through the city streets to Times Square. Grabbed our morning coffee at Starbucks, which thankfully opens before the sun is up and stood in line for a couple hours to guarantee our spot in the studio. While we waited, we were entertained by half of NYC coming to a halt to watch the underwear model show for National Underwear Day. Quite awkward. Here I am with Diane Sawyer:

Tried cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery - they look so pretty, but honestly, don't waste your time. These are the worst cupcakes I've ever had. And here is Luke not really enjoying them.

We toured the school on Wednesday, but had a bit of trouble getting there, due to the crazy rainstorm early that morning. It flooded the tracks on the subway, so the whole subway system was shut down. Which meant that all of NYC needed a cab at the same time. But I, master cab hailer, managed to get one and we made it to the school on time, only to find out that half of the chefs couldn't get there and most of the students. What a day for a class audit! Despite the hectic day, it was so good to sit in a couple of the pastry classes and see what culinary school is really like. The chefs were welcoming and pleasant, the projects looked like a lot of fun, and their facilities are phenomenal. We got a full tour of the building and finished up with lunch in their restaurant. Super yummy!

We loved it so much, and we are ready to move up there. We're just praying that Luke will find a job up there and that the right apartment will come along. If anyone wants to move up there with us, let me know! We'd love to share an apartment, since the rents are so high.

70 Years

We recently went to Houston to celebrate my grandparents' birthdays - they both are turning 70 this year. I didn't realize Luke had already uploaded pics of the party until just yesterday, so here are a few for you to enjoy! I'll probably put some more on our family blog.

You'll notice my Uncle Dave with the camcorder - he always has that thing in hand when he comes for a visit. I've never seen the videos, but if you were to get a hold of any of them from over the years, then who knows what awkward stage you'd see me in!

Luke's artistic attempt at capturing one of my yummy homemade cookies. You'll notice my uncle and aunt staring longingly in the background at the cookie. Actually, you can't really see their real faces, but I know they want that cookie.

I have no idea what I'm doing here, but isn't my grandma cute?

Rainy Days

I love waking up to the sound of rain. It means that our dog Molly will be extra good that day, because rain and thunder scare her. She hides in our bathroom, curled up in a little ball.

I met up with Crystal and Skyler today for coffee - she and Jonathan and baby Skyler moved here recently and live about 10 minutes down the road from us. It's so nice to have them nearby. Hopefully we'll get to know them better, and I love having a girlfriend to talk to again. Still haven't quite connected with the gals down here in Austin. I think it's a different kind of crowd - more career focused perhaps?

Now I'm back at home, enjoying the rain and the quiet house. Luke and I are planning a road trip to New York with our moms at the beginning of August. We'll drive on the weekends and spend the weekdays in the city. We're hoping to catch a Broadway show or two, visit Chelsea Market, eat good food in Chinatown, do more of the real New York thing rather than see all of the tourist attractions again. We'll also visit the French Culinary Institute up there, to see the facilities and have dinner in their restaurant. Super excited about this trip!!!

:)

I can't sleep tonight, and I have to be up at 5 am for work. This is not a good thing! But I'm so excited about nothing in particular and everything all at once...it feels like big things are coming are way, although I'm not quite sure what they might be. It seems like God has something in the works, and it feels like the night before Christmas when I was a kid and could hardly contain my excitement for what was to come the next morning. I just wish I knew when I was going to find out what it is! I love this feeling, but I can't stand that it keeps me awake when I have to be up before the sun rises.

2 Years

Yesterday Luke and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary. God has been faithful and we have seen His hand in our marriage. I am so thankful for my husband, for his patience and sweetness, for the way he leads and trusts and hopes in God's continued faithfulness.

I experimented with some of the settings on my camera. I'm a terrible photographer...have no eye for design with pics and no skills to capture them in a unique way.

After Graduation

Lela's Graduation Day

We spent our time waiting for the graduation to start by taking random pics with the family. Peyton made goofy faces in all of them.

Pics

I didn't quite get these up right when we got back to Austin, as Mom has kindly pointed out in the comments section. But here they are finally! I'll just post some highlights, since it's really about 60 or 70 pics total. These are pics that I found on my new camera (birthday gift). Luke went around with this sign taking pics of everyone. The little girl is Brian's daughter.

Pics coming soon....

Luke gave me a camera for my birthday, so I'll post pics as soon as we get back to Austin. We're in Houston right now celebrating his sister's graduation from high school, and the camera battery died. Stay tuned for more....

Growing Pains

When I was a kid, I used to get these awful pains in my knees, especially at night when I was trying to go to sleep, or at least that is when I noticed the pain. I was always told that they were growing pains, and so I bore through them, because I knew that I would be taller as a result.

I still feel like I get those growing pains, more figuratively than literally. I get into a zone of comfort, where everything seems to be going okay, and then something jabs me, like a sharp pain in my knees (again, a metaphor), to make me shake out of the comfort and remember that I'm not the one controlling my life. There isn't anything terrible going on in my life right now...we've just been studying Joseph in my Bible study, and we've talked a lot about how we should remember God. We get caught up in our own lives and forget Him. For some people, we forget Him when times are good, like me, and call on Him when we find ourselves in trouble. For others, it's a matter of forgetting about Him when times are bad. A gal in the Bible study mentioned how one of our biggest enemies can be comfort...we skip along, bluebird on my shoulder style, and God is sitting there, going "Hey you! Remember me? The One who brought the good into your life? I'm going to let this little thorn come in to shake you out of this stupor, to bring you back to Me."

So, the growing pains - that jab of reality that says that we need to pause and remember. Whatever our own personal thorn is, it makes us think back on how God has carried us through similar situations, how He has been gracious in the past, how He has always provided for us, and how He will take care of us through this pain. And, after a time, the pain eases, but hopefully we won't forget Him when it does.

New Job!

I met with George today to discuss working for him at Royal Blue Grocery. Everything seemed to click, so I start next Friday, at 7 am. Thankfully I only have to get up so early once a week! I'm excited about this new opportunity.

Potential 3rd Job

So the title of this post makes it seem as if I do nothing but work work work, and that Luke and I are so destitute that he makes his wife work 3 jobs. Ha! You are so mistaken. Ok, maybe not about the money, as we could always use extra money to pay off my wonderful, expensive Baylor education, and it's been tight since we moved to Austin. But with 2, and potentially 3 jobs, I still have more down time than you can imagine. I average about 3-5 hours a week doing diet emails for Curves, and then 10-20 hours with Luxe (usually closer to 10).

Enough of that...let's talk about this new possibility. There is a great little grocery store in downtown Austin that we supply cookies to on a weekly basis. The owner of this store has called my boss at the bakery to see if we could all work out a deal where I work for him at the grocery store one day a week. This is so random! But I love how the Lord has provided me with these jobs to help Luke and I pay off my school debt and put the rest into savings for whatever the future holds. I am going down there tomorrow to meet with the owner to see if this is a good fit for both of us, and if I want to take on more shifts at a later date, etc.

Now when I say little grocery store, I mean little. This isn't like working at Whole Foods or HEB - this is a downtown-y neighborhood store, where a lot of office workers stop by on their lunch breaks. The people there are great! And I wasn't looking for another job, but somehow God saw it fit to bring this opportunity my way. Yay God!

Bake Bake Bake

I've got just a few more days alone at the bakery - S. comes back next week. I'm so thankful that this time is almost up, but I've really enjoyed it also. It's helped me see just how much hard work is involved in running a business by yourself.

Here's a rundown of how my week went:

Monday, call from both RBG and another coffeehouse asking for 4.5 dozen cookies, and a couple dozen biscotti and chocolate covered macaroons, since the ones I had delivered last Thursday were gone already. Delivered them that afternoon, after frantically baking. I'm glad people are buying the cookies, but I didn't realize how much easier it is when two of us are doing it! I spent all last week baking as well.

Tuesday - spent 8 hours icing 150 french macaroons and then putting them ever so carefully into small boxes. Those things are so fragile! On top of that, I had to package 150 pieces of fudge, then make everything look pretty with ribbons and such and deliver it to an ad agency downtown.

Wednesday - finally had some time to develop my own recipes for some recipe contests I'm entering this month, ran errands, tried to do laundry and failed to finish it, found tons of stuff to put in the garage sale this weekend and priced it all. Also did a lot of Curves emails. Only day I had to myself this week, and I didn't even get to relax.

Thursday - baked 7 dozen cookies for RBG

Thursday at 4:30 - done, I'm exhausted, but I still have to finish getting ready for the garage sale, pick Luke up from work soon, cook dinner and finish that laundry I tried to do earlier in the week.

Friday (tomorrow) - more work on the garage sale, more development of recipes (they're due Monday!), hopefully no more orders for the bakery, help Brian move his stuff into the other half of our duplex, drive to Houston and price more stuff there for the garage sale. Then come straight back to Austin Saturday afternoon in case any calls come in for the bakery.

Just imagine if I was trying to do this with kids! We're almost at 2 years of marriage, which is when a lot of our friends started to have babies. We are so not ready for that. I'm too selfish with my time.

I love my job though! It'll be so nice to have S. back, but this has to be the coolest job ever. And people love you even more when you tell them you work for a bakery.

The Unfathomable Goodness of God

God is good. Today I might have been in Virginia, doing my dietetic internship at Virginia Tech. I had picked Va Tech as my first choice for my internship, but I wasn't placed in one at all. Instead He has me here in Austin. For what purpose right now, I'm not sure. But His plans are good. I'm sure there are many reasons why I'm not in Virginia right now and am still in Texas, one of which might be the tragedy that occurred today at Va Tech. So, needless to say I am thankful that God is in control of my life.

Wicked

We went to see Wicked this past weekend...on Easter Sunday, ironically. The show was awesome! Here are some pics of the fam while waiting to be seated.

On My Own

I'm currently running the bakery on my own for the next couple of weeks. My boss and her hubby are on vacation, so I've been crazy busy making sure orders get done and delivered in a timely manner. I didn't realize how efficient we are together until I had to do it all by myself. But the week is almost over, and I'll get to take the weekend off and drive to Houston with Luke to visit family.

Our good friends Brian and David are moving to Austin, hopefully this weekend, and there is a really strong chance that they will move in right next door to us. It'll be so good to have some old friends here in Austin with us - we've made new friends, but it's nice to have the people who know you the best close by.

Workin' 9 to 5

I'm nearing the end of my first week with Luxe Sweets. I absolutely love it! The Austin Chocolate Festival is going on this weekend, so we spent all week getting ready for this, and yesterday and today we spent all day at the festival. It's so much fun getting to meet other local bakeries and chocolatiers, as well as the various people who drive in for the festival.

We've gone through about 500 cookies in the course of 2 days, and countless amounts of fudge and chocolate bark. Friday was a slow day, since most people wait until the weekend to drive out there, so all of the vendors wandered around meeting each other and trading goodies - by the end of the day we didn't even want to hear the word "chocolate" anymore. My dentist is going to hate me. Luckily, we're next to a catering company that is serving crepes, and they have been supplying us with samples all weekend. Bourbon crepes with pecan cream cheese and strawberries, drizzled with chocolate; chocolate crepes with bananas foster; savory green onion crepes with mushrooms and bacon and parmesan cheese (yum!).

We're really hoping we'll win most popular booth - we have a really strong chance - people keep coming back for our award-winning cookies, and we're also the booth closest to the door, so as they're on their way out, customers spend their last tickets with us. But - the crepe gals charge 2 tickets per crepe, instead of 1 like the rest of the vendors (and understandably so, since the crepes are hot and fresh and cost more), so they might beat us out. Soraiya is a genius in the kitchen, and her products are incredible!

I'm so exhausted, since this job requires standing on your feet all day everyday - my back hurts, my legs hurt, my feet hurt. I wash my hands so many times that they are dry and cracked. It doesn't help that our booth at the festival is the front and center spot (we thought this was an excellent location until it turned out to be cold and windy and the door is kept open all day).

I've had a great time getting to know Soraiya (Luxe Sweets is her baby) and her husband Azim. We work really well together and have had a blast this weekend at the festival. Luke is coming out to the festival tomorrow to meet them and see what I do now. Thankfully after this weekend it will slow down a little, and hopefully I can catch up on my sleep.

They should post pictures from the festival online soon - I'll post the link when they're up.

She Works Hard for the Money

I got the job with the bakery! I start tomorrow at 9 am. Which means...it's late and I have to go to bed. Like right now. I'll post more later.

I love Sundays!

God has proven to be so faithful - I know He doesn't have to prove it, but He has definitely shown it to Luke and me lately. I tend to stress out and forget the big picture, worrying about what's to come rather than relying on God to bring it to pass in His own time. Today I was reminded so much of His faithfulness, particularly through various members of our new church. We spent all day involved in church activities; we're attending a new members class at All Saints, and it was absolutely wonderful. And we had community group again tonight. Just a few weeks ago, we knew absolutely no one in Austin, and now we're meeting new people every week and finally making some friends. I've had trouble finding a job, and now I have an interview tomorrow with a bakery. Last weekend I just broke down - money's tight, the job search was dismal, Luke works a lot and I don't have girlfriends here to call on. My faith was so weak...I lost all sight of the blessings God has bestowed on us. I lost sight of what my hope should be in - not in the signs that God gives us sometimes to let us know He is here, but in Christ alone. I should be focusing more on Christ, because He is ever constant, rather than on what does or doesn't go my way each day, if my expectations are met or not.

"The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps." (Proverbs 16:9)
